The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
“I recall what you said to me once. That words have the power to change us. Your words have changed me, Tess; they have made me a better man than I would have been otherwise.”
Tessa from The Infernal Devices, part one of three. This looked a lot better in my head.

“Jonathan-” Tessa started.
But Jace cut her off violently. “Stop calling me that!” Tessa stared as Jace tries to compose himself, a view not new to her.
“I’m Jace Lightwood. I’m no Herondale, I barely knew my family.”
Tessa smiled kindly at him, “You may not have known them, Jace. But you are Herondale, you are a warrior like they are, you fiercely protect those you love at the cost of your own life. You are a Herondale, Jace. You are last of the Herondales, and I am very proud of you.”
I miss everything about you
and when he was done, and he’d set the violin back in its box, Will’s eyes were closed, but Tessa’s were full of tears. Jem set down his bow, and came toward the bed, drawing back his hood, so she could see his closed eyes and his scarred face. And he had sat down beside them on the bed, and taken Will’s hand, the one that Tessa was not holding, and both Will and Tessa had heard Jem’s voice in their minds. I take your hand, brother, so that you may go in peace. Will had opened the blue eyes that had never lost their color over all the passing years, and looked at Jem and then Tessa, and smiled, and died, with Tessa’s head on his shoulder and his hand in Jem’s.

Chapter 19: As she moved away, the clockwork angel slipped free and she saw to her surprise that where it had lain against his skin it had left a mark behind, no bigger than a shilling, in the shape of a pale white star.
Will stood there deep in thought. Images of when he was 12 flashed through his mind. He remembered that day still very clearly because for 5 years he had denied himself happiness. Now standing here in front of him was Tessa. Tessa, his Tessa, his beautiful wife and mother of his two beautiful children. He had the girl he loved and would only ever love in front of him. She was holding their daughter Lucie. He still could not believe that he was a father of such beautiful children. Even though they had their older son James, being a father was something Will had only imagined in dreams. “Look Lucie” said Tessa “Daddy is coming” Will moved toward them and smiled.
The fire should have killed her. It would have killed any normal human. But she is part Shadowhunter and part demon, and she was protected by the angel whose fire she drew on. It shielded her even in those last moments as it blazed up and burned away its own corporeal form.
